New Committee Members

May 27th: BUCA held an open committee meeting to co-opt candidates for the new positions we’ve created to reflect the new areas we want the society to get involved in. Our new committee members are:

Matthew Bedrossian, Social Secretary 09/10.
Alex Kresin, Freshers’ Rep 09/10.
Benjamin Tuffley, Non-Portfolio 09/10.
Jess Walker, Non-Portfolio 09/10.
Robin Wickenden, Mature Students’ Rep 09/10.
This is just the initial stage of our expansion, however. Next year, we hope to get individual Hall Reps, as well as getting involved with the environment, the local community, and charity work.

June 5th, the BUCA committee will be hosting an end-of-year dinner, with the President and Vice-President of Birmingham University CF as guests.

JOIN THE BUCA COMMITTEE

The Bristol University Conservative Association is in a unique position. It is numerically the largest of the three political party societies, and has the potential to expand its membership into the thousands by taking advantage of an instinctively conservative student body. The opportunities this would give the Association are similarly huge.

We are now expanding the committee with new positions to reflect the new areas we want BUCA to get involved with. Wednesday 27th May is the first stage.

A key position open to you is Social Secretary. This will be a major role in the coming year as we plan on putting a heavy emphasis on socials.

We are looking for a Freshers’ Rep, who will be in charge of helping us at Freshers’ Fair as well as recruiting first years throughout the year who will be crucial in our attempts to promote student voting and canvassing for our local candidates in the run-up to the next General Election. A Freshers’ Rep will be crucial in organizing our new members to get to our socials next year too.

Other positions on offer are two Non-Portfolio roles. As you can guess from the title, this role has no firm set of duties. Basically, you’ll be able to help out in all areas of our work next year.

We are going to be interviewing and selecting for the roles at our next committee meeting on the 27th May. Candidates will be expected to discuss what ideas they have for their role in particular and the society in general. Time and venue to be confirmed a little later, but it will probably be at 7pm at Wills Hall Memorial Building, with drinks likely to follow.

Candidates and Cocktails

On the 4th March we are holding a Candidates and Cocktails event at Bar Ha Ha in Berkeley Square.The candidates in question are those which cover the areas where most University of Bristol students live - either in halls or private residences in Clifton and the surrounding area.

Charlotte Leslie

Charlotte Leslie is the Parliamentary Candidate for Bristol North West, which covers the areas of Avonmouth, Henbury, Henleaze, Horfield, Kingsweston, Locleaze, Southmead, Westbury-on-Trym and, most importantly for UoB students, Stoke Bishop.

Nick Yarker

Nick Yarker is the Parliamentary Candidate for Bristol West. The Bristol West ward serves Ashley, Bishopston, Cabot, Clifton, Clifton East, Cotham, Easton, Lawrence Hill and Redland, subsequently covering a lot of areas where student live after their first years.

The event is open to both BUCA members and non-members, so that those who are already Tory supporters can meet and get to know both of them a bit better, while also allowing those interested in politics generally, to find out why they should register to vote in Bristol and why they should vote Conservative.
